August 29, 2005 – September 4, 2005

August 29 to September 4, 2005 This week was very quiet. The banding station was closed on the 29th and 30th of August because of poor banding weather. Even though there can be incredible bird activity during rainy days, the banders really did need a little break. Banding was really slow for the remainder of the week, with either seven or eleven birds banded a day, for a total of 47 birds banded. The banding total for the fall season is just over 1750 birds. There was major movement of birds on September 2nd with almost 500 yellow-rumped warblers counted. The 2nd also had a very good species count including the first palm warblers, lapland longspurs, and horned larks of the fall. Flocks of Canada geese also were seen above the banding lab on the 2nd. The first golden-crowned kinglet of 2005 was banded this week. Next to the hummingbirds, it is the smallest songbird in Alberta. Numbers of American pipits and dark-eyed juncos moving past the lab increased throughout the week. All the species that have been listed above migrate later in the fall. They are a sign that migration is slowing down. However, there are certain species that do indicate the end of fall migration, fortunately those have not been seen yet, we will let you know when they are. Even though many of the “late migrant” species are now moving past the lab and many species that breed in the area have not been seen for awhile now, there is still about a month of migration left and many interesting things to see. Owl monitoring continued this week with two new northern saw-whet owls banded bringing the grand total to three. It is still early, and it is three more saw-whets than were banded this time last year. Now that September has arrived many of the seasonal park positions have ended. This also includes Sara, our assistant bander; she has left for the winter (hopefully wanting to return next year). She became a great bander and definitely was a great person to work with.
