In the fall of 2005 an exciting new era of bird conservation in boreal forest will come into being. The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC) will open its doors for the first time in November, 2005. The product of many years of hard work and partnership between the LSLBO and Parks and Protected Areas (Alberta Community Development), this world-class facility will go far in advancing conservation of boreal forest birds.

The centre is over 6,000 square feet in size and provides a laboratory; research library; office space and computer work stations for staff; volunteers, and visiting researchers/educators. Public services include reception, sales, fast foods, indoor & outdoor exhibits, and education, volunteer, and ecotourism programs both onsite and through provincial outreach programs.

BOREAL CENTRE – THE FACILITY

The Centre is designed to reflect bird flight by its overall shape and an inverted roofline. Rather than a peaked roof, the upturned roof and overhang is a stylized tribute to a bird’s power stroke during migration and flight. At the right angle, the BCBC literally looks ready for flight! The Centre is located in an area of Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park where services are limited or nonexistent. These facts along with a desire to design a high performance building lead the partners to adopt a relatively new standard in sustainable building design.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) system awards points for “green building” construction. Points are arranged under six major categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process. The BCBC is setting new sustainability standards in a government building in a number of ways:

  • Commercial grade composting toilets and waterless urinals
  • Rainwater capture and treatment system
  • Geothermal heat pump system
  • Using sustainable building products ex. Strawboard panels

BOREAL CENTRE – VISION & GOALS

The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation is a joint venture between the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and Parks and Protected Areas. These two groups have joined to form a partnership for the purposes of working together towards shared goals.

Our vision at the Centre is
“Nurturing Stewards of the Boreal Forest”

Our Mission
Our mission is to create an environment that supports learning, understanding, collaboration and informed decision making with respect to conservation and sustainability. We focus our attention and research on boreal birds, learning from them more about the health of our ecosystem. We work collaboratively with researchers, government, industry, educators and members to find better ways of living and working that sustain the ecosystems we are all a part of.
