MONTHLY EVENTS

i. JULY — Guided Hike to Lily Lake

Look at a changing forest through new eyes as we focus our attention on songbirds during this three-hour hike. This guided hike will emphasize the importance of different habitats and food sources for migrating songbirds. Cost for this event is $4 per person.

ii. AUGUST — Hummingbirds and Hamburgers BBQ

Join us for a barbeque in the backyard and see one of the smallest migratory birds in the boreal forest. Hummingbirds are faithful visitors of sweet-water feeders and gardens with flowering plants. We will enjoy an early evening of bird watching and tell tales of summer sightings. Cost is $10 adults, $5 children.

ii. SEPTEMBER — Swan Watching Field Trip

Come along as we set up to watch migrating Tundra Swans head south along the shores of Lesser Slave Lake. We will set up a blind at dawn to watch these magnificent birds fly overhead. Listen to the sounds of the flocks and learn how to distinguish geese from swans. Cost $5 person.

iv. OCTOBER — Winter Bird Identification Presentation

Warm up to winter birding inside as we refresh our bird identification skills for winter residents. This presentation will highlight backyard visitors as well as boreal forest birds. This 1.5 hour PowerPoint will also introduce the Christmas Bird Count and its importance. Admission is $5 adult, $3 children.

v. NOVEMBER — Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation Opening

vi. DECEMBER — Christmas Bird Count

Watch the sun rise and join us as we count the winter birds in the Slave Lake area. This is an event for the whole family. Participate for a few hours or for the whole day. The data collected will be submitted to Bird Studies Canada as part of the international Christmas Bird Count. There is a $5 administration fee per person that is paid to Bird Studies Canada.
