Hoary Redpoll

Another exciting milestone for the LSLBO!

The Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory staff banded our 102nd species on the weekend. It was a Hoary Redpoll and I hear reports that he was one of the cutest birds that they have ever banded. It was also the first time that our Bander in Charge, Richard Krikun has banded this species as well.

So Spring is shaping up to be really fun! The beautiful wood warblers are starting to arrive and every day there is something cool in the nets. As of today, we have banded 228 birds from 22 species during spring migration, but we have been recording thousands of migratory birds during our visual counts.

Richard Krikun and Nicole Linfoot have been banding since April 22, plus Javen Green, our U of A field assistant has returned. We also have a long-term volunteer (Jesse Bell) at the lab this summer to provide operational support. Thank you!

Location

Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, home of the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory, is a 2 1/2 hour drive northwest of Edmonton and on the east shoreline of Lesser Slave Lake. The second largest in Alberta, it stretches for 107 km.

Researchers have established that Lesser Slave Lake and nearby Marten Mountain act as a natural barrier to migratory birds. Many migrant birds avoid crossing the lake and veer to the east. Marten Mountain, elevation 1,020 metres above sea level, funnels the migrants along the shoreline.
