Boreal Interpreter

Job Description:
The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC) is looking for a creative individual to deliver fun, interactive and hands-on environmental education programming about birds and the boreal forest for audiences of all ages. The BCBC is an exciting education and research facility located in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park. Working as member of our education team, the Boreal Interpreter will be responsible for the planning and delivery of exciting and informative programs for a wide ranging audience including families, school groups, tourists and seniors. Other duties include: conducting tours of the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory Banding Lab and the BCBC; providing visitor and information services; assisting with special events, and the presentation of Park summer interpretive programs including theatrical evening programs, point duties and guided hikes.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 year of post-secondary education in natural sciences or education.
- Preference may be given to candidates registered as a full time student in a post-secondary institution in 2009/2010 and will be returning as a full time student.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate prior to commencement
- Criminal Record Check (Including a vulnerable sector check) will be required prior to commencement.
- Able to work some evenings and most weekends during peak summer period.
Assets:
- Experience working with children, especially in an outdoor setting.
- Knowledge of boreal forest ecology including birds and bird identification
- Volunteer experience
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Theatrical presentation skills

Job Description:
The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC) is seeking a friendly, outgoing individual who enjoys people and working in a dynamic team environment. Based at a new education and research facility located in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, the successful candidate will be responsible for visitor information services at the centre as well as coordinating operations at our small hostel accommodation (the Nest). Other duties include: assisting with retail operations at the gift shop; promotion of events, providing tours of the BCBC facilities, marketing, assisting with education programs for audiences of all ages, taking bookings for programs and facilities, plus some administrative duties. Note: some light housekeeping duties at the Nest will be required.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 year of post-secondary education in related field
- Preference may be given to candidates registered as a full time student in a post-secondary institution in 2008/2009 and will be returning as a full time student in 2009/2010
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate prior to commencement
- Police security check (including vulnerable sectors) will be required prior to commencement.
- Able to work some evenings and most weekends during peak summer period.
Assets:
- Retail experience, exceptional customer service.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Cursory knowledge of birds and plants of northern Alberta, willingness to learn
- Enjoy meeting new people
