Being the northernmost migration monitoring station in Canada, one of the primary goals of the LSLBO is to conduct extensive avian monitoring programs throughout the spring, summer and fall. One of the target avian groups is songbirds, specifically Neotropical migrants.

As of 2004, we have banded over 38000 birds from 242 species.

A landbird migration monitoring program is operated during the spring migration (May 2 – June 17) and the fall migration (July 6 – Sept. 28).

A breeding bird program, called Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS), operates from May 25 to July 5.

In 2004, we conducted a Northern Saw-whet Owl pilot program. The program ran from the first week in September until the middle of October. We look forward to operating this program again this year.

The LSLBO also operates a number of smaller research programs. These include:

  • Canada Warbler Project
  • Study of American Redstart moults and sub-species
  • Nest counts
  • Loon surveys
