VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The LSLBO relies on volunteer assistance for the research programs and many other administrative and operational services. You do not have to be an expert birder to become a volunteer. If you have a passion for birds, wilderness, and wish to see some of the most sought after bird species in North America, we'd like to hear from you.
LONG-TERM VOLUNTEERS
You may be an experienced birder that requires little or no training, or you may have other talents. There are opportunities for Long Term Volunteers to assist in any Research program area. You could do fieldwork or work strictly in cyberspace. The list is endless of possible tasks including extracting birds, banding, data entry, maintenance, carpentry, trail work, desktop publishing, graphic design, business management, non-profit law, etc..
If your heart is set on fieldwork, you must register with at least four weeks in advance. Register early to avoid disappointment. These positions are best suited for individuals who can make a two-week time commitment (or longer). Previous experience and knowledge are an advantage. Fieldwork involves working long hours in the outdoors, and can be physically demanding.
SHORT-TERM VOLUNTEERS
Short-term Volunteers stay for a week or two. Weekend and other volunteers are also welcome. Some short-term volunteers are highly qualified birders and/or banders, while many just want to learn more about identification, banding or other LSLBO activities.
Volunteers are expected to do their share to maintain and improve the facilities. A detailed Volunteer Manual is available and must be read thoroughly on arrival, particularly those sections dealing with general operations and safety.
All volunteers now require a vulnerability check. This can be obtained for your local RCMP office. For more information, please call the office of the LSLBO at 780-849-8240.The LSLBO will not pay for the check.
VOLUNTEERS REGISTRATION
Space is limited. All volunteers must register prior to their arrival.
Please e-mail birds@lslbo.org for more information.
