Fall Migration Monitoring continues to be slow and the boreal forest around the banding lab is very quiet as most of the local breeding songbirds have already departed for their wintering grounds. This beautiful Fox Sparrow captured earlier this week is one more sign that fall migration is coming to an end as they are a late migrant species at our station. So enjoy these tiny songbirds while you can until they hopefully return once again next spring! Note: All birds are handled by professionals and released unharmed as permitted by federal and provincial authorities.
While Fall Migration Monitoring continues to be slow this season, our Owl Monitoring program has started up quickly. Since August 31, we have banded 24 Northern Saw-whet Owls! So far, it has been a pretty quiet fall migration at the station but we did add a new species to our list! Meet species #112. The first Merlin ever banded at the LSLBO.
