
Summary: the contract educator will deliver environmental education and interpretive programming to students and the general public for the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and the Lesser Slave Forest Education Society. These programs are curriculum based, community group focused or special events for the general public. Program development is based on specific grant deliverables, and the mandates of the Lesser Slave Forest Education Society (LSFES), Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory (LSLBO), and Alberta Parks through the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC). This is a casual and flexible position based on our program delivery needs during the year. Although we deliver year-round programs, the typical busy education periods are: Spring (May to June), Summer Day camp programs, Fall (Sept to Oct) and winter (Feb to Mar).
Position Reports to: The Executive Directors of the LSFES and LSLBO
Contract hourly rate: $25/hour based on experience
Please note that this is a casual contract position. This educator will be hired on an as need basis based on program bookings. There is no guarantee on the number of hours that this position will be hired during the year.
Responsibilities and Activities:
- Delivers informative, hands-on and dynamic curriculum based environmental education programs to all grade levels
- Delivers curriculum-based programs to schools based on Alberta Learning program of studies and the mandates of the LSFES, LSLBO and Alberta Parks
- Develops and delivers fun family-focused community focused programs
- Provide accurate information of LSLBO Research and Monitoring Programs for visitors at the BCBC or public tours.
- Delivers community outreach programs for the general public based on goals of the LSLBO, LSFES and AB Parks.
- Assists with the delivery of summer camp programs for children and youth including the Enviro-quest Camp.
- Provide support for special event programs as assigned especially the Annual Songbird Festival.
- Administrative/Other related duties
- Ensures accurate program delivery statistics are maintained for the BCBC and LSFES.
- Ensures that all program materials are stored in the correct locations at the end of a program. Maintains and updates/replaces program materials as needed

- Energetic and positive attitude with students and public.
- Team Player – active participant in the Education Team and supports team members at all stages of program development and delivery. Collaborates with LSFES, LSLBO, Alberta Parks and staff of partner organizations as appropriate during program development and delivery
- Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Good public speaking skills with a group of public.
- Strong classroom management skills both in the classroom and the field. Ability to lead a class of up to 30 students effectively.
- Creative, friendly and has a high degree of flexibility in their work environment.
- Ability to multitask, manage and complete multiple projects within timelines provided
- Good at prioritizing and managing workloads from two organizations/Directors at the same time
- Ability to work in a dynamic work environment.
- Able to work outside in all seasons in all weather conditions
- Able to travel extensively throughout the Lesser Slave Region
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of boreal forest ecosystems
- Knowledge of boreal forest flora and fauna
- Knowledge of LSLBO research and monitoring programs
- Familiar with Alberta Learning program of studies
- Computer literate- including publisher, power point, excel, word, outlook. Canva
